The curly questions regarding finding the "Right" rental car

So you have decided it's time for a road trip!!! You have been online, pulled out the old New Zealand Road Atlas you purchased about 20 years ago, and have started to plan your route. How hard can it be after all. It's not like you are driving in a foreign currency and are not 100% sure of the road rules.

Added bonus - without foreign tourists, it's a perfect time to get out and explore.

The only question you really need to answer is "What rental car do I book"?

And then once you start looking at the various options available, all sorts of questions come up regarding do you need this, or that, or insurance... AHHHH.... it can be a bit daunting. Especially when the small print says "This car or similar".

Here are a few tips that I apply when helping out my clients.

Firstly - Who is travelling (including how many). Not only does this give an indication of how many seats you need in the vehicle... you also need to take into consideration the luggage each person will be.

Secondly - Where are you travelling to, and when? Some roads in New Zealand are not the most comfortable if you are travelling in the "Cheapest and Cheerful" vehicle. And if you dont plan for the conditions - it could turn a great adventure into a disaster. Also - there restrictions in what roads you are covered for insurance on.

Thirdly - Where are you collecting if from, and where are you planning to return it to. Not all rental car companies have ports in every location within New Zealand ... plus there are some locations which require you to pay a one-way relocation rate. Sometimes these can be avoided with minimal adjustments to your journey.

Always remember that the cheapest option is not always the best option. As a Travel Broker I have access to a wide variety of suppliers, and ensure that I always match you up with the best vehicle that will ensure you have a successful roadie!
