Powering Down: Singapore Airlines Restricts Power Bank Usage from April 2025

Travellers flying with Singapore Airlines (SIA) will need to adjust their in-flight charging habits from April 1st, 2025. The airline has announced a new policy restricting the use of power banks onboard, joining a growing list of carriers implementing similar measures.

Effective that date, Singapore Airlines customers will be prohibited from charging portable power banks via the onboard USB ports. Furthermore, passengers will not be permitted to use their personal power banks to charge devices during any phase of the flight. This change aims to enhance safety and align with evolving industry regulations.

Singapore Airlines adheres to the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, which classify power banks as lithium batteries. These batteries, while convenient, pose a potential fire risk if damaged or improperly handled.

To ensure compliance and passenger safety, SIA maintains strict guidelines for carrying power banks. Passengers must pack their power banks in their cabin baggage, as they are strictly forbidden in checked luggage. This allows for easier monitoring and management of these devices.

Regarding capacity, SIA aligns with industry standards. Customers can carry power banks with a capacity of up to 100Wh without needing special approval. For larger power banks, those ranging between 100Wh and 160Wh, passengers will need to seek and obtain prior approval from the airline.
