Effective 1 October 2025, Emirates is implementing important changes to the rules around carrying and using power banks onboard their flights. If you're flying with Emirates soon, it's essential to understand these updates to avoid any issues at the airport or during your journey.
⚠️ Key Changes at a Glance
Only one power bank per passenger is allowed in your carry-on.
The power bank must be under 100 watt-hours (Wh).
You may not use a power bank to charge devices while onboard.
You may not charge a power bank using the aircraft’s power supply.
The power bank must have visible capacity rating information printed on it.
Power banks must be stored in your seat pocket or under the seat — not in the overhead bins.
Power banks are still prohibited in checked baggage (this rule remains unchanged).
💡 Why Has Emirates Made This Change?
After conducting a comprehensive safety review, Emirates is taking proactive steps to reduce the risk of onboard battery-related incidents. With the increasing use of power banks, the aviation industry has seen a rise in lithium battery malfunctions — including rare but serious events like overheating, fires, or even explosions.
Most power banks use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which, if damaged or overcharged, can enter a state called thermal runaway. This is a dangerous chain reaction where a battery overheats uncontrollably, potentially causing fires or releasing harmful gases.
While many modern devices include built-in safety features, not all power banks do — especially cheaper models without overcharge protection. Emirates’ new policy aims to reduce these risks by:
Prohibiting usage during the flight.
Ensuring power banks are easily accessible in case of emergencies (rather than stowed overhead).
This approach aligns with Emirates’ continued commitment to safety — protecting both passengers and crew.
✅ What This Means for You
If you're flying with Emirates from 1 October 2025, make sure to:
Check your power bank’s capacity (it must be under 100Wh).
Do not plan to use your power bank during the flight.
Store it safely under the seat or in the seat pocket — not in the overhead compartment.
Never pack it in your checked luggage.
These small steps help keep your flight experience smooth and safe.
